FAQs for Phase 1

Please find below a list of the most frequently asked questions at this Phase.

How soon will I hear from a recruiter?

This will vary depending on the speciality you are applying for and the country you are applying in.
This could take anything from 1-5 days.

 

Will I hear back if I am unsuccessful?

Whilst we endeavour to get back to every application, regardless of success, please understand that we do receive a substantial number. Therefore, it might not always be possible to receive a response if you are unsuccessful.

What if I can't make the date of my interview?

You will be liaising with your recruiter/a member of our team to find a date that works best for you both.
Often they suggest a selection of dates and you will be able to choose the date and time that suits you best.
Please note, we consider a number of applications, so where possible it is advised that you choose a date that is proposed by your recruiter.

Will I need to bring a model/friend with me for my interview, to act as my client?

This depends on what you will be demonstrating. Your recruiter will confirm this in their email correspondence with you.

What do I wear to my interview?

Looking professional, neat and smart at LWA is very important, so it’s good for us to see how you present yourself in a professional capacity.

Will I need to pay for my travel to get to the interview?

LWA does not cover the costs of travelling to the interview.

PHASE  3: PRE-TRAINING PREPARATION

There are some important steps that you need to complete before attending your training, from obtaining the correct visas, to having a medical assessment. You will also get access to the LWA Pre-Learning portal, where you need to undertake key tasks before your arrival at one of our training centres. Further information can be found in the video.

What is the most important preparation I can do before training

  1. Study and re-study your Pre-Learning – this is going to be one of the most crucial things you can do. It will make your training smoother and give you additional confidence
  2. Practice your public speaking, using your pre-learning as a guide make sure you practice your public speaking. In front of friends, family or even in front of the mirror
  3. If English isn’t your first language, practice your English. Learn key phrases and technical language and practice it

What should I expect when coming to training?

Training with LWA is there to prepare you for a life at sea. The training may feel challenging, but, you are already excellent in your profession of choice, we are just here to make sure you are equipped with the skills, techniques and confidence that will help you be the best you can be on your contract.

You should expect high levels of professionalism, hard-work, learning and being open to new opportunities, techniques and meeting new people, form different countries and backgrounds!

What happens if I do not pass

We endeavour to give every student every opportunity to make a success of their journey and we will spend additional time with you on a 1-2-1 basis to ensure that you are ready to go to your first contract.

If, together, we feel that you are not prepared for your journey to begin, you may be asked to leave the training. At this point we will arrange with you how to get back to your country of residence and suggest elements that you can work on before re-applying.

Pre-Academy Checklist

5. C1D Visa

This process must be started as soon as possible. Depending on the time of year there can be delays. Please note there is a 4-6 week wait for an appointment, so do not forget to allow plenty of time to arrange this prior to training – please see your welcome pack for more information.

2. POLICE / CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK

You are required to provide us with a recent police background check.
Police / Criminal Check needs to be obtained within 3 months of your training start date from a recognised authority in your country/region.
Please see your welcome pack for specifications of accepted Police/Criminal back ground checks.

 

3. SEAMAN’S BOOK INFORMATION

Please note for South African citizens you must obtain a Seamans book before joining your vessel, for all other nationalities you will be advised during the recruitment and or training process if required. Where possible, you should obtain your own country Seaman book.

4. MEDICAL

To work on board a cruise ship, you must have a valid new hire LWA Medical. This examination must be obtained as advised 2-3 weeks prior to joining training at London Wellness Academy South Africa. Please see your welcome pack for more information

5. DENTAL NOTE

The dental visit should be conducted within 3 months of your training date. This should be sent to your PEME doctor prior to your medical or taken on the day of your appointment – please see your welcome pack for more information.

6. PRE-TRAINING STUDY

Six weeks prior to your training date, you will receive an e-mail confirming your staff ID to login and password. You must complete all required training before your training start date

7. PROFESSION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Each profession has it’s own specific requirements for training. Please refer to your welcome pack for more information on your specific profession requirements

8. FIRST DAY ATTIRE

You should dress in business attire for your first day – dress to impress!
